It's such a comforting thing to know that some things do not change. While Joe the Plumber may very well have to change his business plans if he has to share his earnings, I can rest in the fact that Sir Bobby Knight will never, ever, ever, change who he is.
Recently, in an interview, he said he would not rule out coming out of retirement to coach again. He also has some kind and gentle words for anyone in college basketball caught cheating:
"In college basketball, if you get caught cheating, they should shoot you because you're too dumb to be alive," he said.
What a statesman! A compassionate leader. Of course, for those who assault police officers, throw chairs during games, kick their own players (son), publicly berate NCAA volunteers, and shoot at people, those people should be allowed to continue coaching and do not fall into Knight's category of "too dumb to be alive."
My "too dumb to be alive" category not only includes Bobby Knight, but also any Chancellor or AD or elementary school principle who would ever consider hiring him to coach their basketball program.
I guess what irks me the most is that Knight has won more games than Dean Smith. Is he a good coach? Yes, if all he did was coach from a little room above the arena with no contact with players or anyone else. He could just impart his knowledge, preferably through a translator, without all of the extracurricular activity that occurs when he actually has to relate to real people.
Let's hope that Knight and his considerable baggage both stay where they are.
